What are the rules for canvassing in Ontario?

If you are canvassing during an election period, you need to know the rules that apply to you under the Election Act. You are not allowed to falsely represent yourself as working for Elections Ontario, a candidate, a constituency association or a political party.

Who are the Canvassers for the political parties?

Canvassers are footsoldiers of politics without whom none of the parties could function. They are in the vast majority of cases the only people from a political party that most of the public ever meet in person. It follows therefore that they should be well prepared for their job.

What happens if you refuse to allow a canvasser into your building?

Owners of multiple-residence buildings or condominium corporations may have to pay an administrative penalty for refusing access. If access is granted outside of the election period, or during the election period but outside of the hours specified by the Election Act, residents may contact their building management.

What are the endnotes in the annual canvass regulations?

The endnotes in this guidance refer to the relevant provisions that have been amended by The Representation of the People (Annual Canvass) (Amendment) Regulations 2019. To help you use this guidance we have produced a Q&A document that should answer any initial queries you may have.
