Sludge and Water Samplers

Sludge and Liquid Sampling Solutions

M-Tech supplies a comprehensive range of sludge and liquid sampling equipment manufactured by Nasco in the USA. The most popular of these is the Sludge Judge® range of samplers, designed to take accurate reading of settled solids, 5% or less, in a variety of liquids. Available as the Sludge Judge®, Sludge Judge® Ultra super strong and Sludge Judge® II large capacity, it is ideal for sewerage treatment plants, chemical plants and food processing facilities. The Sludge Judge® is made up from detachable 5` long sections which screw together. The basic unit ships with three sections, making up a 15` sampler, but additional extensions sections are available if a longer length is required.

The Sludge Judge® and Sludge Judge® Ultra hold 1 oz per foot (89ml per 0.31m) and the Sludge Judge® II holds 6oz per foot (171ml per 0.31m). Also available for the Sludge Judge® are a 6` cleaning brush to aid cleaning the unit after use and a cotton carry case, which holds four sections and the cleaning brush.

If you need to take liquid samples, why not check out the Swing Sampler, ideal for collecting liquids from a flowing stream such as sewers. The end of the Swing Sampler rotates allowing the sampling angle to be controlled form 0 to 90 degrees. The Swing Sampler comes with a 960ml polyethylene bottle with a screwtop lid.

Need to take a sample form a specific depth? Why not use a Tank Sampler. Available as a 10` unit, the Tank Sampler is made up of two 5` sections which may be extended through the addition of middle sections. The Tank Sampler is easy to use:

  • Screw the two sections together and lower the unit to the specific depth required (the sampler is marked in 1` (30cm) increments
  • Pull and hold the stainless steel wire at the top which opens the valve allowing liquid to flow inside
  • Release the wire allowing the valve to close, trapping the liquid inside
  • To release the sample, hold the sampler in the middle at about a 15 degree angle and pull the wire, holding the end over an appopriate contained (such as a Whirl-Pak® bag) or press and hold the pin on the bottom against a hard surface such as a pail. This will release the valve and the sample will flow out

Samples can be immediately isolated in the clear, styrene vial and capped for storage and transport. To use, simply unscrew the scoop from the vial, push scoop into the item to be sampled, gently lift and rotate the scoop to collect the sample, pull the scoop out, and cover with the vial.

Also available are a wide variety of both stainless steel and plastic dippers for liquid or powder sample collection, and probes and powder samplers for powders and grains.

Whirl-Pak Sample Bags

  • Puncture Proof Tabs
  • Guaranteed Sterile
  • Reduced Storage Space
  • Easy Identification
  • Leakproof Closure

Development of Whirl-Pak® Sample Bags
Developed over 35 ago, American-made Whirl-Pak® sample bags were the first sterile sample bags on the market. They were designed to provide milk haulers with a container for collecting samples of bulk produced milk. Whirl-Pak® sample bags made possible the ``universal sample system``. This means that the single sample can be used for all tests required for quality control, product content and legal compliance. Whirl-Pak® sample bags are made from a blended virgin, low-density polyethylene. The blend gives the bags two important characteristics:

  • Exceptionally clear film, for maximum sample visibility
  • Superior strength, producing an unbreakable sample container

They may be used for taking samples of liquids, semi-solids or solids. Whirl-Pak sample bags ® are patented under US Patent No. 2,973,131 and other patents pending.

Puncture Proof Tabs

All Whirl-Pak® bags feature ``Puncture Proof Tabs``. This patented process means that the tape on the tab extends past the ends of the wire. The result is no sharp points which could puncture the bags, scratch a person`s hands, or puncture gloves. This important feature is found only on Whirl-Pak®, making it easier and safer to use than any other sampling bag. The ``Puncture Proof Tabs`` process is patented under US Patent No. 5,180,229.

Guaranteed Sterile

Ethylene Oxide Gas: Whirl-Pak® bags are sterilized with ethylene oxide gas. Only Whirl-Pak® bags go through this separate sterilization step after manufacturing; if you are not using a Whirl-Pak® bag, you are probably using a bag that has not gone through this important sterilization procedure. Look for the Whirl-Pak® Name. Each and every bag is clearly marked with ``Whirl-Pak®`` on the sample bags. If it doesn`t say Whirl-Pak® ...it`s not our patented sterilized sample bags. Standard Methods states ``For some applications, samples may be collected in pre- sterilized plastic bags.`` Whirl-Pak® sample bags meet this description.

Reduced Storage Space
Whirl-Pak® sample bags use only 10% or less space than other containers.

Leakproof closure
By whirling or tightly folding the tab over three times, the Whirl-Pak® bag becomes a leakproof closure or container, which eliminates loss of a valuable sample, mess, and a possible need to collect a new sample.

Importance of Sample Collection

Proper water and sludge sampling procedures are of vital importance. Laboratory findings are completely dependent on the quality of the sample collected. It is imperative that each sample collection be representative of the lot from which it came, and that it arrives at the laboratory in the same condition it was in at the collection point. All Whirl-Pak® sample bags are made in the USA.

Swing Sampler for Fluid Collection from Sewers

M-Tech supplies a comprehensive range of membrane filtration equipment and consumables, from filter papers and filter membranes to vacuum manifolds and disposable filter monitors.

Membrane Filters

Products for Membrane Filtration

M-Tech supply a wide range of filtration equipment supplied by Advantec MFS. Membrane filters are microporous plastic films made from a variety of polymers. Since the commercial introduction of membrane filters 30 years ago, they have become widespread for use in industrial/process and research applications. The versatility and unique physiochemical properties of membrane filters have made ``membrane filters`` a common phrase.

Membrane filters, microporous filters, screen or sieve filters are all synonyms for filters with specific pore ratings which retain particles or microorganisms larger than their pore size by surface capture and some particles smaller than the stated pore size by other mechanisms. Such filters usually have a rated pore size within the range of 0.1-5µm. This type of filter is referred to as a membrane.

Advantec MFS membranes (with the exception of PTFE and PCTE) are reverse phase, solvent cast membranes. Here, controlled evaporation or removal of the complex solvent systems forms the porous structure. Reverse phase membranes are available in Nitrocellulose, Cellulose Acetate, Mixed Cellulose Esters and Nylon. PTFE membranes are made by a patented process where the membranes are stretched biaxially to form the porous structure.

Important performance characteristics of Advantec MFS membranes:

Thin, high porosity - Typically, a single layer of membrane is approximately 150µm thick with a porosity of approximately 80%. Pore ratings represent mean values around which there is a distribution of pores. These porous filters exhibit high liquid flow rates and high gas flow rates per unit area. In addition, one must consider there is a very high surface area available for selective adsorption or nonspecific binding.
Strength - Advantec MFS membranes are monitored for both burst (longitudinal) and tensile (lateral) strength. Supported Acetate and Nylon are the strongest reverse phase membranes are available from Advantec MFS, followed by Cellulose Acetate. All membranes will withstand autoclaving. Consult the specifications for more complete information.
Chemical and Biological Cleanliness - Membrane cleanliness is affected by the raw materials that are used in the manufacturing process, membrane treatments and by the way the membrane is handled after the casting operation. To assure membrane cleanliness, Advantec MFS uses only high purity reagents and raw materials. Once cast, the membranes are handled in a class 100 clean room to minimise ambient contamination. Some membranes will contain 0.1-3(wt%) of an aqueous wetting agent. Cellulose Acetate membranes have a lower aqueous extractable, 0.1(wt%), nitrocellulose the highest 3.0(wt%).
Thermostability - All Advantec MFS membranes can be sterilised by autoclaving. Advantec MFS membranes can be used over a broad range of temperatures. Cellulose Acetate membranes can withstand 130ºC, Nylon will withstand 180ºC. Specific maximum temperature limits can be found in the catalog (contact us for one). In addition, these membranes exhibit minimal shrinkage at elevated temperatures. Cellulose Acetate membranes should be pre-wet prior to loading then in the holder and autoclaving.

Choosing the correct membrane filter for your needs:

  • Determine what liquid or gas will be filtered
  • Determine the maximum pore size required to achieve the results you want
  • Using the chemical compatibility chart, determine which polymer types are available
  • Identify any unusual process conditions that would otherwise limit your choice of membrane
  • Choose your preferred pack size

Disposable Filter Monitors

M-Tech supplies a range of sterile disposable filter monitors, which may be used to eliminate some of the time consuming activities associated with traditional filtration methods (such as sterilisation of filtration units, etc), manufactured in the US by BioPath Inc.

Disposable Filter Monitors are available pre-sterilised, removing the requirement of sterilising the filtration equipment, and eliminating any risk of cross contamination associated with transferring a membrane from a packet to a filter unit. The Disposable Filter Monitors are constructed with a removable funnel, allowing you run a 100ml sample, which may then be discarded after use.

Disposable Filter Monitors are available with a removable membrane allowing the membrane to be transferred to an agar plate for processing as traditional methods.

Available with White (nitrocellulose) and Black (mixed-ester) membranes in 0.2μm and 0.45μm pore size, 47mm or 56mm diameter fixed or removable membrane.

All Disposable Filter Monitors units have 100ml removable sample reservoir. The membrane is fixed in place for use with broth media. Surface area 25% greater than with a 47mm membrane.
